How to read an oral–systemic health claim
A four-part framework for moving beyond a headline and interpreting a scientific claim more responsibly.
Identify the exact claim
Is the source describing an association, a prediction, a possible mechanism or a proven treatment effect?
Look at who and what was studied
Check the population, sample size, comparison group, duration and whether the study examined people, laboratory models or existing records.
Separate significance from importance
A statistical difference may be small, uncertain or not meaningful in everyday clinical practice.
Find the limitations
Responsible research explains what the study cannot prove and whether the result applies beyond the group that was examined.
